Background

The Guyana government will partner with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) to strengthen primary healthcare delivery and promote preventive health awareness through community-based initiatives.

President Irfaan Ali announced the partnership during the Jagannath Ratha Yatra celebrations at West Central Mall in Leonora. Under the initiative, health screening facilities will be introduced at ISKCON centres to encourage regular health check-ups, healthier lifestyles and preventive care.

The President said the programme reflects the government’s broader strategy of combining healthcare, education and community engagement to improve national wellbeing.

The announcement came during the annual Jagannath Ratha Yatra, also known as the Festival of Chariots, one of Hinduism’s most significant festivals. Originating in Puri, India, the festival marks the ceremonial journey of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, and symbolises devotion, unity and service.

President Ali said the values represented by the festival remain relevant today, especially as societies face growing mental health challenges and social pressures. He said greater self-awareness and a stronger sense of purpose were essential for individual and community well-being.

He also praised ISKCON for its long-standing contribution to Guyana through education, community outreach and its focus on discipline, peace and service. The President added that spirituality should be reflected in everyday actions rather than being limited to places of worship.

He continued to promote environmental stewardship and encouraged citizens to preserve Guyana’s forest cover, water bodies, and biodiversity in a way that ensures the two go hand-in-hand with development and conservation. The significance of collective action was emphasized by the Ratha Yatra chariot’s symbolism, and he urged all citizens to adopt compassion, service, and responsibility in their lives.
