Background

BeOne Medicines will invest $300 million to expand its flagship manufacturing and research and development (R&D) centre in Hopewell, New Jersey, strengthening its US production capabilities and supporting the growth of its oncology pipeline. The latest investment increases the company’s total manufacturing commitment at the Hopewell site to more than $1 billion.

The expansion includes a new three-storey, 145,000-square-foot building next to the existing Princeton West Innovation Campus. The facility will house drug product manufacturing, packaging operations and quality control laboratories. It will also combine the company’s biologics production with new small-molecule drug product capabilities at a single location.

The project is expected to create around 120 new jobs and support the development of BeOne’s haematology portfolio and future cancer treatments.

Chief Financial Officer Aaron Rosenberg said the investment reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening manufacturing in the United States while improving access to innovative cancer medicines for patients.

The announcement comes as the US government plans significant tariff changes for imported medicines. President Donald Trump has proposed raising tariffs on imported generic medicines to 100% from August 2028, increasing them to 200% after one year. The administration said the move is intended to encourage pharmaceutical companies to invest in manufacturing facilities within the United States.

Earlier this year, the administration also introduced a 100% tariff on patented branded medicines under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.

BeOne’s investment follows similar expansion plans by other pharmaceutical manufacturers seeking to strengthen domestic production. Earlier in July, Evonik announced a $100 million investment to expand its drug substance manufacturing facility in Lafayette, Indiana.
