Background

Cedar, a patient financial platform for healthcare providers, has launched an agentic artificial intelligence platform aimed at patient medical billing. Called Kora Platform, the suite of purpose-built AI agents integrates with healthcare organisations’ existing electronic health records, telephony and call center systems.

The platform offers autonomous inbound voice, autonomous outbound voice, two-way text and advanced reporting capabilities. Cedar Chief Strategy Officer Dugan Winkie said the company wanted Kora Platform to act as an agentic advocate present in every patient’s pocket.

Kora Platform adapts in real time to predict a patient’s needs and trigger the appropriate next financial action, the company said. It also retains memory of past conversations with patients, allowing them to skip repeating information during follow-up calls.

Winkie noted that difficult-to-collect patient categories were growing rapidly, pointing to changes from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act as a contributing factor. He added that Cedar had seen a 40 percent rise in uninsured self-pay dollars, with billing navigation becoming increasingly complex for patients who are often left to manage the process alone.

Cedar first introduced Kora in April last year. The AI agent operates around the clock to resolve common billing questions during the first interaction, trained on the platform’s proprietary healthcare billing data. Winkie said Cedar has processed 1.5 billion individual payments across 50 million unique financial journeys, describing it as a behaviour ledger that fuels the platform’s personalisation engine.

Kora’s automated inbound calling has handled over 600,000 patient conversations, achieving a 40 percent containment rate and a 20 percent outbound pickup rate. The platform also sees a 21 percent relative payment rate within a week of outreach, with strong patient satisfaction scores.
